Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia honors UD president
The Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia presented its 2016 Paideia Award to University of Delaware President Dennis Assanis during its 80th anniversary gala, held Nov. 26 at the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing.
Assanis was one of three high-achieving Greek-Americans recognized at the event and the only honoree to receive the Paideia Award, named for a Greek word that connotes the education of the well-rounded citizen.
Hellenic University Club officials said Assanis “exemplifies ‘paideia’ and deserves our highest praise for his accomplishments in science, engineering and in shaping a 21st century university education.”
“I am so honored to receive the Paideia Award,” Assanis said. “The education of all our citizens in the arts, humanities and sciences is truly the ticket to a better society, and I am privileged to dedicate myself to enabling others to achieve ‘paideia.’”
Also at the gala, acclaimed sculptors Evangelos and Zenos Frudakis were presented with the club’s Achievement Award.
Proceeds from the event benefited the organization’s scholarship fund, which this year awarded grants totaling $48,500 to 17 full-time undergraduate and graduate students.
The Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia brings together Greek-Americans and others who wish to learn more about subjects and ideas rooted in Greece and to celebrate 4,000 years of Greek culture. As part of its mission, the club organizes programs and activities, fosters professional interaction, provides scholarships for full-time college and university students, and recognizes and honor individuals of high achievement as they relate to ancient and modern Hellenic ideals.
