7:42 a.m., Aug. 17, 2011--The current edition of the University of Delaware Messenger magazine, which is mailed to alumni, parents and friends, can be viewed online at this website, where an interactive PDF version also is available.

The Messenger contains news from the campus, including articles about faculty and student research and athletics, as well as profiles of UD alumni and their remarkable personal and professional accomplishments. The new issue features some of the fun and festivities of this year's Alumni Weekend and a cover story about Richard F. Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry and a 2010 Nobel laureate in chemistry, who was honored at several events on campus in May.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

A few other highlights of this Messenger are news about a program in which health sciences students work with members of the community who have limited mobility, an interdisciplinary Delaware Design Institute project by faculty and students that won kudos at the latest Philadelphia Flower Show and a research project in which fashion and engineering students worked together to create sustainable materials and use them to make clothing and shoes. A special two-page report summarizes UD's economic impact on its home state; the full report can be viewed on the 2011 Diamond Report website.

Alumni profiled in the magazine include twin brothers who follow a Chinese tradition of repaying good deeds by giving back to their community and their alma mater, a former Blue Hen quarterback who has started a foundation to assist other former UD athletes and their families in difficult situations, a recently retired FBI agent whose career included work on many high-profile incidents of terrorism and a plant science graduate who combines her botanical knowledge with artistic talent in her career as a scientific illustrator.
