This weekend
(February 28-March1), members of the University of Delaware Emergency
Care Unit attended the annual National Collegiate Emergency Medical
Services Foundation (NCEMSF) Conference which took place at the
Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. For the second year running
UDECU had the largest contingent at the conference with 32. They
joined 91 different collegiate EMS organizations represented by
over 900 students, faculty, and alumni in a weekend of lectures,
training, and fun. The conference began on Friday evening with check-in
and the annual Physio-Control EMS Skills Competition. UDECU’s
team was composed of Field Promotables Mary Fannon and Paige Sacher,
Technician Jesse Marsh, and Driver Jeff Sands. They competed in
three different stations: Trauma, Medical, and Teamwork. The crew
was very happy with their performance after correctly treating a
pedestrian struck by a vehicle, a sick person presenting with meningitis
symptoms, and navigating through a narrow pathway with blindfolds
and their legs tied together. The team won 1st Place and was presented
with a plaque during the awards ceremony on Saturday, with a trophy
to follow. During Saturday and Sunday UDECU members attended lectures
and training's ranging from “Deadly Sins of EMS”, to
“Major Incident Management”, and “Acute Alcohol
Intoxication”, to “What the @#$% Am I Supposed to Do
With That”. Two presentations had an especially good showing
from our members including a lecture by UDECU Alumni Steve Snow
entitled, “Beyond MRSA: The Problem of Emerging Anti microbial
Resistance,” and a lecture by NCC Paramedic and director of
Shore Emergency Educators, Dave Aber called, “Huff and Puff
and…”. During the awards ceremony on Saturday, UDECU
was recognized multiple times. First, UDECU received the Continuing
Excellence in Collegiate EMS award in reorganization for our dedicated
service and unique training techniques. Next UDECU’s Advisor
of 35 years, Jack Lynn, was presented with a plaque in honor of
his years of service both to our organization and to collegiate
EMS. Finally, UDECU’s Skills Competition team won 1st Place
in Physio-Control EMS Skills Competition!! Unfortunately the trophies
were mysteriously disassembled the evening before by parties unknown
and still at large, so UDECU was presented with a plaque with a
trophy to follow in the mail. The weekend was very successful and
the comportment of all members involved was exemplary. Congratulations
to the Skills Competition team and Jack!
