Sunday July
13 UD-1 participated in the "East Campus Incident" hosted
jointly by the University of Delaware and Aetna Hose Hook and
Ladder. At 9:05 on Sunday July 13 UD-1 was dispatched to the Gilbert
A Dorm for a sick person, a 26A1. Upon arrival UD-1 crew of Chris
Gale, Kristen Fantel, Paige Sacher and Jenn Silver found several
unconscious people in the hallway and requested New Castle County
Paramedics to Respond as well as additional BLS. The UD-1 crew
began patient care and divided their resources. Ambulance A-9
arrived on scene and as they entered the building their Carbon
Monoxide detector alerted and A9's crew requested a full response
from Sta. 7,8,9,10. A9 attempted to contact UD-1 crew, with no
response. This action alerted response from additional UD Emergency
Care Unit EMT's (UD-2) Jeff Sands, Rachael Lee and Ike Bennett
and a response from Aetna HH&L, Singerly Fire Company, Millcreek
Fire Company, Christiana Fire Company, West Grove Fire Company
and New Castle County Paramedics. Additionally University of Delaware
Occupational Health was dispatched to the incident. Firefighters
arrived on scene, Incident Command was established and a rescue
attempt began to rescue UD-1 crew from inside the building. UD-1
crew was located, found unconscious and removed from the building
.Paramedics and EMTs began triaging additional patients. A transportation
officer arranged for transport of patients to various receiving
facilities. Patients were transported from the incident to the
"Hospital" where a nurses report was given. At approximately
noon the incident commander declared the incident Under Control
and advised all patients had been transported from the scene.
Overall the
drill went very smoothly and drills like this will help better
prepare UD-1, Aetna HH&L and all other agencies involved for
actual MCI's in the future. The lessons learned from this drill
can be used on all MCIs large and small. In all the day was a
complete success and a great experience the the UD-1 and UD-2
crew.
