Four SAMPE-UD Student Members Start Their Careers

In January 2007, Solange Amouroux left for a full time position with Dassault Aviation in France, where she had interned earlier. This was followed by Michael Golt who started work at the Army Research Laboratory in Maryland in July 2007. CCM has a close and long standing relationship with ARL. Justin Clews left in November 2007 to start his career with Wyman-Gordon in Boston. Evan Brodsky started his career at Wallace, Montgomery & Associates, Towson, MD in December 2007. We congratulate them on their success and wish them all the best in their endeavors.

 

SAMPE-UD Website Has a New Look

One of the President Amanda Lim’s initiatives after taking office in October 2007 was to revamp and update the existing SAMPE-UD website. It was given a new look and launched during the 2007 Thanksgiving weekend, courtesy of SAMPE-UD’s new member Gaurav Nilakantan.

 

SAMPE-UD and CCM Host 15th Annual Space Beam Challenge

On July 11-12, 2007 SAMPE-UD and the Center for Composite Materials (CCM) hosted the 11th annual "Space Beam Challenge" in collaboration with the Delaware Aerospace Education Foundation. As part of the Delaware Aerospace Academy, the "Space Cadets" - learned about composite materials and saw demonstrations in CCM's Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory. SAMPE-UD provided the cadets with a kit of materials to design and fabricate their own composite space beam, with the goal of designing a beam with the highest strength-to-weight ratio.

 

SAMPE-UD and CCM Host 14th Annual Space Beam Challenge

On July 12-13, 2006 SAMPE-UD and the Center for Composite Materials (CCM) hosted the 11th annual "Space Beam Challenge" in collaboration with the Delaware Aerospace Education Foundation. As part of the Delaware Aerospace Academy, the "Space Cadets" - learned about composite materials and saw demonstrations in CCM's Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory. SAMPE-UD provided the cadets with a kit of materials to design and fabricate their own composite space beam, with the goal of designing a beam with the highest strength-to-weight ratio. Two SAMPE-UD Students Win 1st and 2nd Prizes in the 2006 Student Symposium

Solange Amouroux, CCM graduate student and SAMPE-UD Treasurer, and Michael Fuqua, senior in Mechanical Engineering, were both selected as finalists in the SAMPE Student Competition. As finalists, Ms. Amouroux and Mr Fuqua both received a SAMPE sponsored trip to Long Beach to participate in the SAMPE Student Symposium, held on Tuesday May 2nd at the 51st International SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition (ISS&E) at the Long Beach Convention Center. Amouroux, competing in the Ph.D. portion of the student symposium, took 1st prize. As the winner, Amouroux received a monetary award. Fuqua, competing in the undergraduate portion of the student symposium, took 2nd prize and also received a monetary award. Congratulations to Solange and Mike on their accomplishments! She becomes the fourth SAMPE-UD student in recent years to earn top honors at the SAMPE Ph.D. Student Symposium. She joins Xiao Gao (2004), Maureen Foley (2001) and Erik Thostenson (2002) as SAMPE-UD 1st prize winners. Check out the CCM news article.

 

CCM Hosts Potential Young Engineers

On February 28, 2006, SAMPE-UD and Center for Composite Materials hosted a tour of the Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory for students from Explorer Post 88. Activities included an introductory presentation on composites and hands-on demonstrations in manufacturing and testing of composite materials. Laboratory demonstrations included VARTM (vacuum assisted resin transfer molding), thermal imaging, state-of-the-art laser cutting, AFM (atomic force microscopy) and mechanical testing. SAMPE-UD Members Win Baltimore/Washington SAMPE Awards

Solange Amouroux and Justin Clews represented SAMPE-UD at the annual Baltimore-Washington SAMPE Student Night on February 8, 2006. Amouroux presented a talk in the paper competition and was awarded first place. Clews took part in the poster competition and was awarded second place. Both received monetary awards. Amouroux received a SAMPE-sponsored trip to present her research at the annual SAMPE Student Symposium, held on Tuesday May 2 nd at the 51 st ISS&E at the Long Beach Convention Center. Congratulations to Solange and Justin on their accomplishments! They did an outstanding job representing SAMPE-UD in the regional student competition. Check out the CCM news article.

SAMPE-UD Students Win 3rd and 4th Prizes in the 2005 Ph.D. Student Symposium

Solange Amouroux, CCM graduate student and SAMPE-UD Treasurer, and Vahik Krikorian, graduate student in Materials Science & Engineering, were both selected as finalists in the SAMPE Student Competition. As finalists, Ms. Amouroux and Mr Krikorian both received a SAMPE sponsored trip to Long Beach to participate in the SAMPE Student Symposium, held on Tuesday May 3rd at the 50th International SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition (ISS&E) at the Long Beach Convention Center. Both competed in the PhD category and took 3rd and 4th prizes. Congratulations to Solange and Vahik on their accomplishments! In recent years, PhD students from the UD chapter have been very successful at the SAMPE Student symposium.

 

SAMPE-UD Student Wins 1st Prize in Ph.D. Student Symposium

Xiao Gao, former SAMPE-UD president, was selected as a finalist in the SAMPE Student Competition. As a finalist, SAMPE sponsored Gao's trip to participate in the SAMPE Student Symposium, held on Tuesday May 11th at the 49th International SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition (ISS&E) at the Long Beach Convention Center. Gao, competing in the Ph.D. portion of the student symposium, took 1st prize. As the winner, Gao will receive a society-sponsored trip to Paris in April of 2005 to present her research at the SAMPE-Europe 26th International Conference and Forums. Congratulations to Xiao on her accomplishments! She becomes the third SAMPE-UD student in recent years to earn top honors at the SAMPE Ph.D. Student Symposium. She joins Maureen Foley (2001) and Erik Thostenson (2002) as SAMPE-UD 1st prize winners.

 

SAMPE-UD Hosts Tour for Pre-Engineering Students

On April 22, 2004, SAMPE-UD and Center for Composite Materials hosted a tour of the Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory for students from the Hodgson Vo-Tech High School Academy of Manufacturing and Pre-Engineering. Activities included an introductiory presentation on composites and hands-on demonstrations in manufacturing and testing of composite materials. Laboratory demonstrations included VARTM (vacuum assisted resin transfer molding), thermal imaging, state-of-the-art laser cutting, AFM (atomic force microscopy) and mechanical testing. SAMPE-UD Officer Elections

New officers were elected at the most recent meeting of SAMPE-UD on March 10, 2004. Justin Clews, Andres Leal, Solange Amouroux and Valentin Neascu are the new officers of SAMPE-UD.

 

SAMPE-UD Members Win Baltimore/Washington SAMPE Awards

Curt Cichanowski and Fuping Zhou represented SAMPE-UD at the annual Baltimore-Washington SAMPE Student Night on February 11, 2004.  Cichanowski presented in the paper competition and Zhao presented in the poster competition.  Both received monetary awards. Congratulations to Curt and Fuping on their accomplishments! They did an outstanding job representing SAMPE-UD in the regional student competition. Check out the pictures.

Baltimore/Washington SAMPE Chapter Meeting Held at UD

The Baltimore/Washington Chapter of SAMPE toured the University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials (CCM) on Wednesday September 18th, 2002. The tour was hosted by the University of Delaware SAMPE Student Chapter. The evening began with an overview of CCM by Professor Suresh Advani (CCM Associate Director) followed by a tour of the Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory. Lab demonstrations included filament winding and vacuum infusion of a composite part. Check out the pictures. 

 

SAMPE Journal Profiles UD Student Chapter

SAMPE-UD is featured in the "Student Corner" section of the July/August 2002 issue of the SAMPE Journal. The two-page article chronicles the history of SAMPE-UD from 1985, when the UD chapter was chartered, to its recent Baltimore-Washington local chapter affiliation. The article also includes an overview of the "Space Beam Challenge" project that SAMPE-UD sponsors every year in collaboration with the Delaware Aerospace Education Foundation (DASEF). SAMPE-UD Tours Alcore

On July 19, 2002, 11 members of SAMPE-UD toured Alcore. Located in Edgewood, Maryland, Alcore is a manufacturer of aluminum and Nomex honeycomb core. The tour, given by Eric Schwartz - Alcore Director of Sales and Marketing, covered all aspects of honeycomb core manufacturing, from fabrication and expansion of the core to machining and net-shape finishing. Four SAMPE-UD Members Receive National Recognition

Four SAMPE-UD student members received awards from the SAMPE International organization in 2002.  John Yakubic, one of the SAMPE-UD's undergraduate members, is the recipient of one of this year's SAMPE Engineering and Science Undergraduate Awards. Three of SAMPE-UD's graduate student members, Erik Thostenson, Witchuda Suwanwatana and Prakriti Tayalia were selected as finalists to compete in the SAMPE Student Symposium at the 47th International SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition (ISS&E). As finalists, SAMPE sponsored their trip to participate in the student symposium, held on Tuesday May 14th at the Long Beach Convention Center. Tayalia, who competed in the MS portion of the symposium, placed third in her category. Competing in the Ph.D. portion of the symposium, Thostenson took 1st place & Suwanwatana placed 4th. Suwanwatana and Tayalia both received cash awards and Thostenson received a society-sponsored trip to Paris in April of 2003 to present his paper at the SAMPE-Europe 24th International Conference and Forums.
