SAMPE-UD member featured in CCM’s Newsletter Composites Update Gaurav Nilakantan was featured in the November edition of CCM’s monthly publication Composites Update. SAMPE-UD President wins the ASC Ph.D. Research Scholarship Award Amanda Lim was nominated for the American Society for Composites 2008 Ph.D. Research Scholarship Award. The award which comes with a research grant of $1000 and a travel grant of $750 to attend the conference, was presented to her during the 23rd annual ASC Technical Conference on Composite Materials in Memphis, Tennessee, Sept 9-11, 2008. Read the full story in the CCM Newsletter here. Earlier in the year, Amanda won the first place in both the SEM and SAMPE PhD student symposiums. Amanda was also a regional winner in another SAMPE organized paper competition. Prior to that, Amanda was also nominated for a UD Honors Day award. 2008 has truly been an outstanding year for Amanda. Her academic advisor Prof. Jack Gillespie, the Director of the Center for Composite Materials is full of praise for Amanda’s technical achievements as well as her leadership in SAMPE-UD. SAMPE-UD recognizes Amanda’s tremendous achievements this year and are sure that many more are to follow!
SAMPE-UD President clinches first place at the SEM PhD Student Symposium Amanda Lim won the first place in the PhD Student Symposium at the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) Conference held in Orlando, Florida during June 2-5, 2008. Amanda had to present a paper and was competing against 16 other doctoral students in the competition that was chaired by Prof. Mark Tuttle from the University of Washington. There were four judges from both academia and the industry. Amanda received a cash prize and was invited to be the first speaker at the student symposium of the next SEM conference in 2009.
SAMPE-UD and CCM students sweep the 2008 SAMPE University Research Symposium Amanda Lim won the first place and Gaurav Nilakantan won the second place in the 2008 SAMPE University Research Symposium, PhD Category, held between May 18-22 at Long Beach, CA. Six doctoral students were selected nationwide to participate in the competition after an initial selection process. The symposium was chaired by Prof. Tony E. Saliba from the University of Dayton. In addition, the Wing Design Team placed fifth in the design category and first in the associated poster category. Congratulations to them for their outstanding performance! Apart from cash prizes, Amanda also received a fully sponsored trip to the 2009 SAMPE conference in Paris to present her work. Read more about it here
Three SAMPE-UD members nominated for University of Delaware Honors Day awards Amanda Lim, Justin Alms, and Gaurav Nilakantan were each selected to receive awards at the Center for Composite Materials as part of the 2008 University of Delaware Honors Day. Amanda Lim won the Directors Award, Justin Alms won the R. L. McCullough Scholars Award, and Gaurav Nilakantan won the Progress Award. SAMPE-UD members selected for the 2008 SAMPE University Research Symposium Gaurav Nilakantan and Amanda Lim will represent the University of Delaware at the 2008 SAMPE University Research Symposium at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California. Amanda automatically qualified for the URS for winning the SAMPE B/W Student Night paper competition, while Gaurav was selected as a finalist after two stages of selection. We wish them the very best at the competition.
SAMPE-UD Students sweep the SAMPE B/W Student Night competition Amanda Lim and “C” Josiah Hughes represented SAMPE-UD at the annual SAMPE Baltimore-Washington Chapter Student Night in February, 2008. Amanda presented a talk in the paper competition and was awarded first place. Josiah took part in the poster competition and was also awarded the first place. Both received monetary awards. Amanda received a SAMPE-sponsored trip to present her research at the annual SAMPE Long Beach Conference in May 2008 at the Long Beach Convention Center in California. Our heartiest congratulations to Amanda and Josiah on their outstanding performances!
