      NSSLHA (National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association) is an organization for students interested in the study of speech and language communication. This group is interested in the speech-pathology field. We meet to discuss upcoming events, fundraisers, community service/volunteer opportunities and more!!




What does the UD Chapter of NSSLHA do?

 Since UD does not have an official undergraduate course of study that prepares students for graduate work in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology, we function primarily as a support group for each other as we prepare to go on to graduate programs and careers in the field.

NSSLHA organizes fundraisers throughout the year raising money for charities that benefit children with speech disorders.  In the past we have donated money to Operation Smile, sponsoring cranio-facial surgeries for children with cleft lip and palate, as well as to A.I. DuPont hospital, sponsoring an augmentative communication device for a child there.

NSSLHA members also participate in various community service activities including the Buddy Program in which we spend time socializing with our peers with special needs. 

Our chapter meets once or twice a month.  In the past, we’ve had guest speakers attend most of our meetings including SLPs and Audiologists who work in a variety of settings so that our members can get an idea of the options they have after graduation.  We also have an annual graduate panel so that members can receive valuable information on what to do about applying to graduate programs and can learn from different professionals from various aspects of the field. 

The members of NSSLHA here at UD do not pay dues.  Most of our members are national NSSLHA members which costs $60 per year.  National membership is not necessary to participate in the chapter at UD; however, national members do receive benefits that others do not.  For more information – check out the national NSSLHA website (link is located below).
