The mission of Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware is to express our Faith in God through fellowship, outreach and service.

Hi, friends,

We’re a month into the new academic year. We started fast, and the pace is picking up. It’s been so good to see so many of you on Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings, and to get to know all of you; and it’s fun to see you in various places around campus at other times, also. I’m glad you’ve found a place in your life for LCM: and I’m glad you feel that there’s a place for you at LCM as well.

One of the frustrations in nourishing the LCM community is that there are always a few who have classes or labs or meetings on Tuesday night, and who worship in other congregations than St. Paul’s on Sunday morning. Remember that those are not the only times that LCM meets. I’ve gotten to know some students in the time that I’ve been here who have almost never been to a scheduled event: and yet, they continue to be part of the community. Senior Leah Colley reminded me a couple of weeks ago that her first year, her only connection with LCM was at a regular breakfast meeting we held at the time.

My greatest hope is that you will be able to remember Pauls’ Chapel as a place of welcome, hospitality and community. It’s a community that extends out into the community in a variety of ways, too: for instance, through FISH, which is our major service project – which is just one more way of being involved in LCM. If nothing else fits your schedule, one aspect of that might be what you need – ordering groceries, getting a delivery from the food bank, or packing the groceries into boxes early on Friday afternoons.

The point is: everyone is welcome! Let me know, or talk to a peer minister or an officer, if you need to find a way to be involved.

Peace and power,

PB

LCM Leadership team

The activities of Lutheran Campus Ministry happen because of the Lutheran Student Association (LSA). Last month you met President Kate Hartman, this month we’d like to introduce a few more of our student leaders.

PicForBioJessica Hollandsworth: Hello all, I am Jessica Hollandsworth.  I am Vice-President of the LSA.  This is my second year at the University of Delaware and I am an Honors Civil Engineering major.  My other campus activities include being a member of the Fightin' Blue Hens Marching Band and a sister of Alpha Omega Epsilon sorority.  I am also very active at my home church, Hope Lutheran, in New Castle, DE.  I taught Vacation Bible School (SonRock Kids Camp!)  and Sunday School.  Besides that, I'm just basically a total geek.  If you ever need help with anything, whether it's class-related or just life-related (trust me... I went through every possible roommate scenario...) I'm definitely there to help you out.  My e-mail is jlhworth@udel.edu.  I look forward to getting to know everyone better throughout the year.  I am very excited about the potential of this group!

DanielleDanielle Swanson: My name is Danielle Swanson, and I am the Fellowship Peer Minister and Secretary of LSA. I am a senior Art History and Art Conservation double major, originally from Albany, New York. In addition to LCM, I am the Vice President of the Art History Club and was accepted into the Curatorial Apprentice Program with the University Museums. In my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies, and going to museums. I plan on applying to Graduate School for the fall to earn my masters in Museum Studies, so that hopefully one day I can work in a museum or historic house.

I love being a part of LCM, helping out with FISH, and I consider Pauls’ Chapel and the people in it as my second home here at UD. I am very excited to take on the new position of Peer Minister, and hope that if you ever need someone to talk to, or have an idea for an event you would like LCM to schedule, you would feel free to email me at danisw@udel.edu. I am looking forward to a great year!

leahLeah Colley: Hello LCM!  My name is Leah Colley and I am the Service Peer Minister.  I am a senior, with a geography major and political science minor.  I joined LCM as a freshman and have been involved ever since, serving as treasurer my sophomore and junior years.  LCM has given me so much these past few years; it has been a place to find great friends, relax, worship, receive guidance, and eat!  I care about the ministry and its role in serving the UD community, and am excited to be involved in decisions to grow and improve the ministry.  As the Service Peer Minister, I find service opportunities in the surrounding community for UD students and make arrangements to volunteer.  In the past, we have helped with the Basket Brigade and Habitat for Humanity, as well as volunteered at Little Sisters of the Poor.  We also have a team each year at Relay for Life, provide food for families with FISH (every third Friday of the month), and tutor children in the area every Thursday.

If you would like to know more, volunteer, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me through my e-mail lcolley@udel.edu or come to my office hours, which are Friday mornings, 9:00-11:00am.

Kristy's Bio PictureKristy Kassinger: My Name is Kristy Kassinger.  I am a junior chemical engineering student here at UD.  I am also the Outreach Peer Minister for Lutheran Campus Ministry.  If you would like to help out with events, have an idea, or would like to be on the outreach subcommittee, let me know!  My e-mail is kristyk@udel.edu.

What LCM means to me:  I enjoy LCM because it gives me a place to go to escape the rigors of academia and get to know people I wouldn’t normally have the chance to meet otherwise.  I love the fellowship and especially the service projects we do throughout the semester, not to mention the GREAT food!

I hope to see at some of our many events this semester!

MarissaGMarissa Gilinsky: Hello reader! I am a senior Animal Science major from Point Pleasant, NJ. I serve as a member-at-large on the Lutheran Student Association board, which means that I serve as a voice and a vote on the board during meetings. My other activities on campus include InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Animal Science Club, and Delaware Steel (a steel drum group on campus).  Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at mgilinsky@gmail.com

Fellowship In Serving the Hungry is a student run grocery distribution program for 60-75 families.  We order food every third Monday evening of the month.  On Thursday the food is picked up at the DE Food Bank and stored at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  On Friday at 2 p.m. we bag the food for the families, and distribute them until 6 p.m.  Get involved by ordering, picking up food, boxing and/or distributing the bags to our families!

Photo recognition

There are several hundred photos of LCM activities posted on the LCM website (lutheransatud.org).

But, most of the photos are unidentified as to who is in them. Help us preserve our history. If you’ve been around LCM for a while, and recognize faces, I can use your help. Let me know, and we’ll figure out a way to make it work. Thanks.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE FUNDRAISING DINNER?????

On October 24, 2009 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. we will have a fundraising dinner at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Newark, Delaware. We are excited to hear from The Rev. John D. Ranney, from the Lutheran Office of Public Policy, Delaware. He will be able to give us an overview of activities happening in Dover related to assisting the needy in our communities. We also expect to hear from our synod bishop, The Rev.  H. Gerard Knoche who will talk about the extent and impact of our mission in the Delaware-Maryland Synod. Bishop Knoche will be retiring at the end of October.

The funds raised from this year’s event will support the FISH (Fellowship in Serving the Hungry) program. Each month we provide supplemental food for 65-70 families in need. FISH, organized by the students of LCM, with assistance from members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and LCS, has been honored by the city of Newark for its support to the community. Several of our LCM leaders have also been recognized individually by the city of Newark and the Town and Gown program for their work with FISH.

LCM has a commitment to tithing, so 10 percent of funds raised will be donated to the mission support work of the Delaware-Maryland Synod. We hope that with the proceeds donated to this ministry, we will have a helping hand in extending the mission of God’s church on earth.

We hope that you will find the time to join us on October 24, 2009. It will be great to see your face and talk to you one-on-one about what we at the Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware are doing to further God’s mission.

In 2008, the students of Lutheran Campus Ministry agreed to accept and support the Stewardship of God’s Creation Campaign.

Lutheran Campus Ministry

Stewardship of God’s Creation Campaign

“Have dominion over the fish in the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28) This call from God is a call not only for us to rule over all that He has created but to protect, nurture, and sustain all that He has created. Just as God took Adam and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and look after it (Genesis 2:15), we too have to care for the earth that God has place us in.

At the Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware, we will strive to be good stewards of God’s creation. Some of the methods to do so include, but are not limited to:

  1. Set the thermostat to a cooler temperature during the night than during the day during cold weather.
  2. Install only digital thermostats that can be programmed to turn off when heating is not necessary
  3. Turn off the air conditioners when no one is in the building during warm weather.
  4. Clean and/or replace heating and air conditioner filters at least twice a year.
  5. Insulate the windows so that warm air is not lost during cold weather.
  6. Turn off lights when no one is in the building.
  7. Use compact florescent light bulbs.
  8. Be sure dishwasher is full, but not overloaded, before using.
  9. Use washable dishes, cups, and flatware. Use paper and plastic minimally. Never use Styrofoam.
  10. Have recycle containers available and highly visible
  11. When buying new appliances, buy only Energy Star appliances
  12. Have information about this campaign highly visible.

By doing these simple measures, we can insure that we take care of God’s creation. Through God’s creation He is worshiped and glorified. Let us “praise the name of the Lord, for by His command they were created” (Psalm 148: 5)
