Mumbai to Philly, a timeline

A brief timeline of events that typically occur after departure from an airport in India (Mumbai, in this expample) to arrival at Philadelphia International Airport.

At Mumbai Airport:

  1. Get boarding pass from the counters in the airport
  2. Check in your luggage (Keep your carry-on luggage with you. Your Passport and tickets should be with you at all times!)
  3. Emmigration (confirms you are leaving the country)
  4. Security Clearance
  5. Board the plane

At Philadelphia International Airport:
Port of entry is the airport you first arrive to in USA. In this case, Philadelphia is your port of entry.

  1. Leave plane and enter airport
  2. Immigration This documents your arrival to USA. You are required to have your Passport, Visa and I-20. Lines at these counters can be very long. So, it is recommended that you get off the plane and reach one of the counters quickly. There might be two lanes: one for Visa holders and other for those who do not have a Visa. You fall under the 'Visa Holders' category.
  3. Grab your checked-in luggage from 'Baggage Claim' area. You will find your baggage on the belt with your flight number.
  4. Grab a cart and load your luggage You have to pay about $3 in one-dollar bills to use a cart
  5. Follow directions to 'International Arrivals Hall' and wait there. Your IGSA pickup volunteer should be there
