Delaware Crew Earns Six Medals at 2009 SIRA Regatta

The Blue Hens placed within the top three spots in almost all events entered at the 2009 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Saturday April 18th and Sunday April 19th. The freshman/novice lightweight 8+, freshman/novice 2nd lightweight 8+, and varsity lightweight 8+ all earned gold, the freshman/novice heavyweight 8+ earned silver, and the varsity lightweight 4+ and JV 8+ both earned bronze.

The freshman/novice lightweight 8+ swept all their events of the weekend.  After placing first in their heat by more than a boat length, they earned a spot in the grand final by defeating Marietta (6:17.70) by less than one second with a time of 6:17.0. In the grand final on Saturday morning, the freshman/novice 8+ placed first by completing the 2000m course in 6:24.6. Marietta (6:26.2) placed second followed by Grand Valley (6:29.9), Virginia (6:33.48), Notre Dame (6:35.40), and UNC (6:35.90).

The freshman/novice heavyweight 8+ participated in only one event, earning silver with a time of 6:50.17. Notre Dame (6:31.2) and Purdue (7:11.04) took first and third, respectively.

In the freshman/novice lightweight 8+ event, Delaware (6:36.8) placed first ahead of Purdue (7:11.04).

After a second place finish in their heat, the varsity lightweight 4+ placed third in the grand final with a time of 7:19.2. Emory (7:10.9) and St. Joseph’s (7:13.7) placed first and second in this event, respectively, followed by William & Mary (7:24.10), Central Florida (7:28.50), and Georgia Tech (7:30.40).

The varsity lightweight 8+ crossed the line first in their heat, winning by a margin of almost ten seconds and earning them a spot in the grand final. In the grand final, they earned gold by finishing in 6:20.5, ahead of Georgia Tech (6:21.53), St. Joseph’s (6:22.30), Washington U (6:31.30), UNC (6:38.00), and Purdue (6:46.80).


The JV 8+ placed second in their heat, sending them to the grand final. Here, they finished third only three tenths of a second behind second place and Jacksonville (6:25.00). Temple (6:21.1) took first place in this event.

The varsity heavyweight 8+ took third in their heat on Saturday morning, sending them to the AB semi-final later in the evening.  In the semi-final, after rowing the first 1000m up on Purdue and Grand Valley, Delaware fell back in the third quarter of the race and finished in fourth place, sending them to the petite final. They finished second in the petite final with a time of (6:19.3), less than a second behind first place St. Joseph’s (6:18.40).
