Hens Race at 2009 Knecht Cup Regatta
This weekend, the Delaware Blue Hens raced in the 2009 Knecht Cup Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Delaware boats raced in four events: the men’s varsity four+, men’s second freshman/novice eight+, men’s freshman/novice eight+, and men’s varsity eight+.
The varsity four+ (7:24.4) placed sixth in their heat, next to Marietta (7:13.8), Lafayette (7:09.1), Boston College (7:07.6), Loyola (7:01.5), and Penn State (6:58.0).
The men’s second freshman/novice eight+ competed in only one race. They placed third (7:34.0) ahead of Rutgers (7:40.4) and Penn State (8:37.0). Marietta (7:13.4) and Bucknell (7:29.9) took first and second.
In the men’s freshman/novice eight+ heats, Delaware (7:06.7) crossed the line first ahead of Marietta (7:10.0), Lehigh (7:10.8), Loyola (7:20.7), and UConn (7:46.7). Later in the day they placed fourth in the semi-finals, earning them a spot in the petite finals. Due to a problem during the start with one of the other crews, the petite final was only about 1250 meters. The freshman/novice eight+ placed second with a time of 4:41.0, defeating Loyola (4:45.2), Lehigh (4:49.4), Lafayette (5:04.2), and BC (5:18.9). Marietta (4:40.1) placed first by a margin of less than one second.
The varsity eight+ placed second in their heat with a time of 6:16.0, less than two seconds behind first place Rutgers (6:14.2). In the semi-finals, they crossed the line in fourth, putting them into the petite finals on Saturay. Racing in rain and with quartering headwinds, they placed third with a time of 6:23.7, within a boat length of first and second place Lehigh (6:21.2) and Loyola (6:22.0).
