Blue Hen Rowers and Alumni Compete at Independence Day Regatta
Philadelphia, PA. Delaware Crew members Will Purman ('13), Patrick Cleveland ('12), Alec Walczak ('12), as well as, alumni Pat Kenney ('11), Colin Ethridge ('11) and Assistant Coach, John Williams, all raced at the Independence Day Regatta this past weekend on the Schuylkill River. Will Purman, Colin Ethridge and Patrick Cleveland all raced for Vesper Boat Club, Pat Kenney raced for Penn AC and Alec Walczak raced for Riverside Boat Club. John Williams also made an appearance at the regatta, racing for North Adams Rowing Club in a Williams College alumni 8+. Out of Vesper, Purman raced a senior lwt 2x, intermediate lwt 2x and intermediate lwt 4x. Colin and Cleveland also raced in the lwt quad. In the Saturday finals, Purman’s lwt 2x finished 2nd behind Undine and just ahead of St. Cathrines in a time of 6:55. Later that day, Colin and Purman’s lwt quad came in second right behind St. Catharines, while Cleveland’s boat finished 3rd with a time of 6:30. In Sunday’s finals Alec Walczak raced a lwt 4+ but just missed the finals in a very tough field. In the senior 8+ both John Williams and Patrick Kenney had impressive performances in their heats and advanced to the finals. Later on Purman won the intermediate lwt 2x in a close finish, beating Malta by only a second. In the premier event of the regatta, John Williams and Patrick Kenney raced in the senior 8+ final. Kenney’s boat dominated the race finishing 12 seconds ahead of 2nd place St. Cathrines and 15 seconds ahead of 3rd place Vesper. John Williams' North Adams boat finished 6th. Look for Blue Hen rowers to compete at Club Nationals and Canadian Henley.
