Varsity Crews Face Harsh Conditions in Boston
The Varsity Heavyweight/Lightweight squads traveled to Boston, MA this past weekend to compete in the historic Head of The Charles Regatta. As expected, the Boston weather was less than desirable; nonetheless, the Blue Hens had a successful weekend of intense racing.
The JV Lightweight 8+ took to the water first, competing in Saturday’s Club 8+ event. The young crew raced hard finishing a respective 32nd, (16:46.171) in a strong field consisting of 46 crews total.
The remaining events for Delaware were all Sunday, with which came strong winds, rain, temperatures in the mid 30’s, and eventually heavy snow. Delaware’s own assistant coach and alumni, John Williams, competed in the Men’s Masters Single event finishing 13th in a time of 21:10:360. Coach Williams raced for UD’s neighboring Wilmington Rowing Club.
Less than an hour later the Varsity Heavyweight 8+ hit the water to compete in the Men’s Collegiate 8+ event. In a large field consisting of 38 crews total, the heavies finished 13th (16:24:765) ahead of local rivals St. Joe’s (16:39:662) and Lehigh University (16:37:582).
The final event for UD was the Men’s Lightweight 8+. The V-Lights finished 11th, respectively, in a time of 16:22:990, beating out top teams including Penn, Dartmouth, and MIT.
The entire UD Men’s Crew team looks forward to another busy weekend of racing as they return to Philadelphia to compete in the Head of The Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, October 24th. The following day, October 25th, the Varsity and Frosh Lightweights Crew’s will head to Princeton to compete in the 3-mile Princeton Chase.
