Spring 2008 Events

- Spring Activities Night: Tuesday, February 12th.  Trabant food court at 7 pm.  Come check out the Tri-Beta table and talk to the officers to find out more information.

- Blood Drive: Thursday, February 14th in Trabant Multi-purpose room.  Contact our President, Krista Neal at klneal@udel.edu, for more information on donating blood or volunteering at the canteen.  

- Spring General Meeting: Wednesday, February 20th at 7 pm, at Wolf 318.  We will have food, refreshments and copies of the application.  This is THE meeting to attend if you are interested in joining or getting involved this year!

- Bagels, Banter, Brew: Wednesday, March 5th from 8-11 am in the Wolf Mail Room- we will have bagels, coffee, etc. for the students and Biology department.  Get to know your fellow professors and students.  Find out about professors research and other student's classes.  Also a perfect time to submit your application.

- Take a practice Biology Subject Test with Kaplan!: Wednesday, March 19th in Gore 223,  7-8pm.  The GRE is the test college students must take to apply to graduate school.  Take advantage of this opportunity to practice on your test-taking skills and fine-tune what you need to focus on.  

- APPLICATION DUE: Wednesday, March 5th - to BBB Mailbox in Wolf Hall or Advisors.

- Kaplan First Year Experience Med-School Panel: Wednesday, April 16th at 7 pm at 318 Wolf Hall.  Medical/Grad School/Undergrad Research Q & A Session: A group of panelists will come to answer questions about grad school, med school, dental school, the application process and undergrad research. 

- Biology Classes Q&A: Sunday, May 4th at 7pm in 109 Willard.  Co-hosted with Making Doctor's.  BBB Officers and MD's will be available to answer any questions you may have about scheduling, professors, classes, and undergraduate research! We are your own personal advisors!

- NY Museum of Natural History: Sunday, May 18th.  For more information, contact Stephanie Culver at sanne@udel.edu. Check out the website http://www.amnh.org/ for information on the museum and its exhibits.  

- Spring Induction: Wednesday, May 14th in 318 Wolf from 7-9 pm.  Start your experience as an official BBB member!  There will be a guest speaker and refreshments.  A great opportunity to meet fellow members and see how you can get involved.  Dr. Hal White is speaking at our Induction this Wednesday. His talk is entitled "Research and the ASBMB Undergraduate Affiliate Network". He will be speaking about research, ASBMB UAN and the EB conference that many of us just went on. He is speaking after the induction and officer elections.

-Dr. Brooker's Seminar on "Transporters and Textbooks": 11/16/2007 12:15-1:15 pm in Wolf 100.  The author of the introductory biology class's textbook is coming to Delaware to talk about his fascinating research on sugar/metal transporters, the process of writing a text book, and the important of writing in a biology career. This should be a fun and exciting talk. Check out the below links and please take time to join us that Friday.
- Kaplan Personal Statement Workshop: 11/20/2007 from 7-9pm in 124 Memorial Hall.  
Kaplan will guide you through the process and start you on the way to an award-winning personal statement. Remember: it's never to early to think about post-graduation plans and start looking at colleges!

Start your experience as an official BBB member! There will be a guest speaker and refreshments. Applications are due November 1st. They must be signed by a faculty member and placed in the BBB Mailbox along with a check for $50 (full membership) or $40 (associate membership). The mailbox is located with the graduate student mailboxes in the room across from Ramona Wilson’s office in Wolf Hall. May 13th 2006

Location/Time: Harrington Beach 12-2pm

Tri-Beta’s End of Year Picnic – Join BBB in celebrating the end of the 2006 school year before cracking down for finals. Come out to do some grilling, socializing, relaxing, and just have some plain old fun! Plans are still in progress and ideas for events or a place are welcomed. E-mail Stevie Dreher with any suggestions. We hope to see you all there!

BBB Spring Induction – Join BBB as we induct new students for the Spring semester as either full or associate members. Come listen to an awesome guest speaker (TBD), grab some dinner, and join the fun. Officers for next year will be elected and some plans discussed. Bring friends and any suggestions. Get the application from the website, Dr. Hodson‘s office (225 McKinly Lab) or Prof. Dion‘s office (241 Wolf Hall). Applications are due on April 7th to Dr Hodson, Prof Dion or the BBB mailbox in Wolf (120 Wolf Hall, next to the elevator in the bio dept lobby area) or BBB mailbox in the Student Activities office (218 Trabant Student Center). Camden Adventure Aquarium – Come join BBB on a trip to explore the aquarium. This isn’t just your average trip to see some fish. They have amazing exhibits and shows that put you in the ocean world, with the sharks. Check out their website: http://www.adventureaquarium.com . April 17th 2006

Along with the Secular Student Alliance, we are presenting a talk regarding the issue of intelligent design and the recent controversy in the classroom and the courtroom.  Our very own Dr. McDonald of the Biological Sciences Department will be speaking about this hot topic. Come on out for a good debate.

Body Worlds – BBB is going on the UD trip to see the exhibit of real preserved human bodies. http://www.fi.edu/bodyworlds UD expanded its buses and there are limited seats, so go to 217 Trabant ASAP and tell Lori Hill, the office assistant in 217, that you are affiliated with Tri-Beta to get a seat! Same prices--$15 for UD students, $25 for non-UD students. Hope to see you there.

Fall Induction for New BBB Members: Application were due to Dr. Hodson‘s office (225 McKinly Lab), Prof. Dion‘s office (241 Wolf Hall), BBB mailbox in Wolf (120 Wolf Hall, next to the elevator in the bio dept lobby area) or BBB mailbox in the Student Activities office (218 Trabant Student Center). We had our ceremony accompanied by a tasty dinner and an awesome speaker, Josh Idjadi, a graduate student who shared his cool research in coral ecology, for all you marine biology lovers out there.  He also shared his life experiences and his road to graduate school. We welcome 20 new members.

Info Meeting for Bio Juniors and Seniors: There was a meeting for Biology Junior and Senior majors.  There were presentations by a panel of three people with useful advice and suggestions for you at this stage of your career:
Dr. Melinda Duncan, Graduate Program Director in Biology, will discuss graduate school, including application points
Dr. Florence Schmieg, Professor in Biology, will discuss medical and dental school application procedures and considerations.
Mr. Steve Sciscione, from the Career Services Center, will address topics and options in career choices.

Delaware Biotechnology Institute: BBB went on a tour through the Delaware Biotechnology Institute with Associate Director, Karl Steiner. We learned about research and current issues in the Biotechnology field. As well as, explored job opportunities.

 

October 2, 2005 – BBB went to Coast Day! University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes opened its doors to the public. We discover the fascinating world of marine science through lectures, research demonstrations, ship tours, touch tanks, activities, a nautical crafts show, crab cook-off, seafood chowder challenge, delicious seafood and much more! It was a blast with so much to keep you busy and interested.

September 20, 2005 -- BBB's first general information meeting for the 2005-2006 school year in Gore Hall! The new officers introduced themselves. The upcoming events for this year and new ideas were discussed. Thanks to all of you that came, the turn out was great! Here's to an eventful and exciting year!

2004

May 5, 2004 – Spring Induction for New Members of BBB. Tons of fun as the members of BBB, associate and full, came together to welcome our newest inductees. Two Graduate students from the U of D came to enlighten us on their research projects and sparked the interest of everyone. In addition, 2005’s officers were elected. Congratulations to President Liang Kang, Vice President Christy Nichols, Secretary Jeff Wyrwa, Treasurer Allen Tseng, and Historians Krista Neal, Sarah Swain, and Stevie Dreher. Last but not least, completed with delicious dinner and refreshments

2003

February 18, 2003 -- Dr Carolyn Booker of Virginia Commonwealth University gave a talk on Dentistry and other health professions to aid students in their decisions on post-graduation plans.

February 25, 2003 -- Dr Florence Schmieg hosted a question and answer session on Medical School Applications in 214 Brown Lab.

March 1, 2003 -- Dye the Night Away Event. T-shirts were dyed and fun was had in the Trabant MPR-C. This event was hosted by the American Chemical Society.

March 3, 2003 -- Deadline to Register for the BBB Regional Conference scheduled for the end of March. Applications available in Dr. Linda K. Dion's office in 241 Wolf Hall.

March 7th, 2003 -- Deadline to submit abstracts for BBB Regional Conference.

March 22, 2003 -- BBB Regional Conference @ University of Delaware.

 

2002

February 20, 2002-- BBB met in the Blue and Gold Room of Perkins Student Center for the first informational meeting of the semester.  The executive board and attendees introduced themselves.  A tentative schedule and applications for the semester were handed out.

April 13, 2002-- BBB member Melanie Evans presented a poster entitled "The Role of Bcl2 in Brain Migration and Survival" at the BBB Regional Conference At Washington College in MD.  Congratulations to her for winning the third place Frank G. Brooks Award for Excellence in Student Research in her group!

April 24, 2002-- Dr. Karlson spoke to the group about his research.

May 5, 2002--  The newest members of BBB were initiated.  Officers for the 2002/03 year were elected.  Congratulations to Michelle Rulon, President; Michelle Skinner, Vice President; Erin Zoranski, Secretary; Lisa Attanasio, Treasurer; and Erwin Puente, Historian.  Dinner followed the induction.
 

2001

September 12, 2001-- BBB held their first meeting of the new school year in Smith Hall.  The new executive board introduced themselves, and ideas for activities for the upcoming year were discussed.

September 17, 2001-- BBB members and faculty met in the McKinley skylight between 8-10 AM for Bagels, Banter, and Brew--an informal gathering were students can grab some breakfast and talk to fellow members of the biology community on campus.

October 9, 2001-- BBB co-hosted an undergraduate research informational session with the American Chemical Society.  Dr. Usher and Dr. White were the featured speakers, and informed the gathered students on the benefits of undergraduate research and the application processes.  Students who were currently doing undergraduate research also spoke at the meeting.

October 25, 2001-- BBB and the American Chemical Society co-hosted a Movie Night study break in 101 Brown Lab.  Students were able to relax and enjoy a snack and a movie.

November 15, 2001-- BBB and the American Chemical Society co-hosted a second Movie Night study break.

November 28, 2001-- BBB met in the Kirkwood Room of Perkins Student Center to induct the new members of Beta Beta Beta.  The induction ceremony was followed by dinner and refreshments.
