The Academic Competition Club started the Blue Hen Invitational in the winter of 1998-99.
The idea was to give more playing opportunities to the high school students in Delaware
and to promote the sport to the future college students. During the first two years of
the tournament, the field was limited to Delaware high schools only.
Since then, the tournament's field has been open to all comers.
