At the University of Delaware, not many opportunities exist for women in
engineering or the sciences to meet and interact with each other, because
classes are very specific to major and year. Because engineering and
technical sciences are such competitive fields and women are still trying
to make a mark within these male-dominated disciplines, we usually find
ourselves pinned against each other, in order just to prove that we're
worthy. We hope to create a sorority geared toward girls who would like
meet other young women in similar majors, that understand the pressures
and workloads we face, that can help each other through tough times, in a
non-competitive environment. The current group on campus that is involved
with women engineers is not very active, and does not promote the same
level of interaction and friendship that a sorority would. While we hope
to sponsor joint events benefiting the engineering and science community
with this organization, we believe that having another organization who's
main purpose is to create friendships between women engineers and
scientists would go one step further.
Also, the college of engineering has been strongly urging
women in the various engineering disciplines to start a chapter of the
sister sorority to Sigma Phi Delta, which is already established here.
Having a female complement to the engineering fraternity would show the
engineering community that it is possible to be well-rounded without
sacrificing academics.
We are also interested in influencing young girls who are in the process
of choosing a possible career, to consider engineering as a viable field,
something that was not mentioned to many of us while we were trying to
select a major. We feel that as a sorority, we can show younger girls that
women engineers are sucessful, and that support is available. By creating
this organization, we hope to leave a lasting impression on the University
of Delaware, that potential science and engineering women can look to for
guidance.
