Study Abroad Pre-Departure Checklist
Congratulations on your admittance to a UD Study Abroad program! Select the button below for your session to learn about the next steps toward your journey:
1. Read up on what the U.S. Department of State and the Center for Disease Control have to say about your host destination.
2. Apply for a Passport or, if you already have one, make sure it is valid for at least 6 months after your return to the United States. The application and renewal process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, but can be expedited at an additional cost. In order to apply for a passport, you will need:
A Birth or Naturalization certificate with a raised seal;
Driver’s license or state ID;
Two official passport photos (pick these up at your local convenience store, post office or printing and shipping company);
Cash or check for $110 passport fee;
Cash or check for $35 processing fee (for new passports only)
The Center for Global Programs & Services will host a semi-annual UD Passport Day. Monitor the CGPS events calendar for details on Fall and Spring dates.
3. Within 10 days of your acceptance, pay the first installment of your program fee by logging in to My Finances.
4. Purchase your flights by visiting the UD Student Universe site. Select your program to see whether there is a recommended group flight. If there is a group flight, make sure to note the purchasing deadline. After that date, tickets and prices on the group flight will no longer be guaranteed. If there is no group flight, or if you choose to fly on your own, please complete the "Submit Travel Itinerary" in your Study Abroad database.
5. Complete the mandatory online student orientation via your Study Abroad database.
6. Complete visa paperwork. If you are on a program which requires visas for U.S. citizens, watch for email instructions from your faculty director(s) or program coordinator.
For non-US citizens: it is your responsibility to research and complete all necessary paperwork. Your program coordinator is available to provide guidance on the process and, if needed, and official letter detailing your "proof of participation." Non U.S. citizens who are studying at UD on a visa should consult with their CGPS Immigration Advisor about their U.S. visa status before committing to their study abroad program.
7. Review your Health Insurance & Travel Assistance.
1. Attend orientation meetings for your program. Confirm dates, times & locations. Your orientation meetings require a total commitment of 4 to 5 hours. The meetings are required, as they prepare you for your program and include details related to expectations, conduct, housing, food, weather and travel.
2. The Center for Global Programs & Services will register you for courses, which, when taken abroad, must be for full credit and a grade. Courses may not be taken as an auditor/listener or on a pass/fail basis.
3. Make arrangements for Financial Aid. Start by visiting our Financing Your Study Abroad page and scheduling a study abroad financial advising appointment with Student Financial Services.
