Classifieds programming error exposed SSNs 3:23 p.m., March 10, 2006--For brief periods between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., during the month of February and until March 2, the Social Security Numbers of 51 individuals with postings on the University of Delaware's Classified Ads web site may have been inadvertently displayed in the category for e-mail address. The problem was the result of a programming error and was corrected. This is the only time such a problem has occurred with the Classified Ads web site and affected alumni users of the system. There is no indication that any personal information was actually acquired by unauthorized persons. It is the University's policy to notify anyone if there is a breach in the security of personal nonpublic information. In this case, letters are being sent to all those who might have been involved. Current students, faculty and staff were not exposed because UD is in the midst of conversion from Social Security Numbers to other identifiers. Alumni identifiers have not yet been converted. Individuals with concerns about identity theft may visit a special web site prepared by Information Technologies at [www.udel.edu/security/identitytheft.html]. Members of the University community with questions about uses of personal nonpublic information should call the Information Technologies Help Center at (302) 831-6000 or send email to [consult@udel.edu].
