DISCOVER WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN

The Anthropology Department at the University of Delaware explores what it means to be human and how humans have existed in different places and times. To do this, we work across diverse social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences approaches. Our department offers an undergraduate major in Anthropology, a major in Anthropology Education to prepare students to become teachers, as well as three specialized major concentrations for students pursuing a more tailored experience: 1) Culture, Medicine, and Health; 2) Human Rights and Global Instabilities; 3) Material Culture, Technology, and Design.

Anthropology at the University of Delaware exposes students to the main areas of anthropology, including cultural, biological, archaeology, and applied anthropology. With this broad training, UD anthropology students can pursue all kinds of careers and graduate studies. Our students and alums have conducted in-depth research on communities worldwide and gone on to work in international economic and political institutions. They have looked at the archaeology and history of past societies and entered the field of heritage studies and historic preservation. They have studied human biology, population health, and primatology. The combination of culture and biology, evolution and history emphasized in our program is ideal for students seeking to enter the health professions and fields related to environment, climate, and sustainability.

Students take advantage of many opportunities to work closely with faculty and to participate in small seminar classes. Courses are enriched by work with departmental collections, visits to museums and special exhibits in nearby sites and cities, and local fieldwork and community engagement opportunities.
